Pets are a source of emotional support. Their loss is deeply personal, and it is not uncommon for grief to appear in unexpected moments.
If you're grieving the loss of a pet, know that your feelings are valid and healing doesn't mean forgetting.
This guide offers support as you find new sources of emotional support while navigating the loss of a pet.

There Is No "Right" Way to Grieve
Everyone experiences grief differently. It's common to question difficult decisions you made, but these thoughts are often a reflection of the love and responsibility you had for your pet, not that you did something wrong.
As you grieve, allow yourself the same compassion you would offer a close friend. Try not to judge your emotions or compare your grief to someone else's.
Honoring their memory
Honoring your pet's memory while finding new sources of emotional support can help make grief feel more manageable over time.
You may find comfort by:
Talking with family members or friends who understand your loss.
Looking through favorite photos or creating a memory book.
Writing about your favorite memories or the impact your pet had on your life.
Maintaining routines that support your own well-being, such as taking walks, exercising, or spending time outdoors.
Volunteering at a pet shelter.
Watching a friend or family members animal while they are away.
Connecting with others who have experienced a loss of a pet.
It is possible to carry your memories while embracing new routines and gradually rebuilding your daily life.
Give Yourself Permission to Move Forward
Giving yourself permission to move forward is the accumulation of small steps, not one pivotal moment or a single leap forward. As you take those small steps, you create new ways to honor your pet and keep their memory an active part of your life. Over time, those steps make room for both healing and remembrance. You learn to carry your pet with you not less, but differently.
When Grief Feels Too Heavy
Grief has no timeline and there are times where you may find additional support helpful. If your loss continues to feel overwhelming, begins affecting your relationships or daily responsibilities, or leaves you feeling isolated, speaking with a therapist can provide a safe and compassionate space to process your emotions.
Therapy can help you to move forward while honoring the bond you shared with your pet. Together, you can explore your grief, develop healthy coping strategies, and find ways to carry your pet's memory with you as you continue healing.
