A new school year is a fresh start—and a great time to get organized. With a few simple steps, you can ease into the back-to-school routine feeling prepared and confident. Whether you're packing lunches, syncing schedules, or refreshing supplies, these tips will help you start the year on the right foot.

Stock Up on Essentials

Start with the basics. Make sure you have all the supplies you need and that everything is labeled, charged, and ready to go.

Checklist:

  • Backpack or tote bag

  • Notebooks, folders, and binders

  • Pens, pencils, highlighters

  • Reusable water bottle and lunch box

  • Headphones or earbuds

  • Tech gear: laptop/tablet, chargers, USB drives

Reset Your Routine

Use the last week of summer to shift your schedule. Gradually move bedtime and wake-up times earlier so the first day doesn’t feel like a shock.

Tips to try:

  • Set consistent sleep/wake times

  • Create a simple morning and evening routine

  • Make space for screen-free wind-down time

Prep Meals and Snacks

A new school year often means busier mornings and packed afternoons. Prepping meals ahead helps everyone stay fueled without stress.

Ideas:

  • Pre-pack snacks (trail mix, fruit, crackers, veggie cups)

  • Stock up on lunch-friendly items: wraps, cheese, boiled eggs, cut fruit

  • Batch-cook one or two dinners to freeze for busy nights

Organize Schedules and Communication

Start the year with a clear picture of what's coming up. Sync calendars and set up a simple system for reminders and check-ins.

Set up:

  • Add school holidays, events, and early dismissals to your calendar

  • Make a weekly visual schedule to track homework, sports, and pick-ups

  • Use a shared calendar app or a whiteboard in a common area

Check Clothing and Gear

Before shopping, go through what you already have. Many students have what they need—it’s just hiding in a drawer or needs a quick repair.

To-do:

  • Sort through clothes and shoes for fit and season

  • Do a full laundry reset

  • Prep weather-appropriate gear: rain jacket, gym clothes, layers

Handle Health and Paperwork

Avoid the first-week scramble by getting ahead of health forms and appointments.

Don’t forget:

  • Schedule physicals and vaccinations

  • Complete required forms for school, sports, or medications

  • Refill any needed prescriptions and stock basic first aid items
