The holiday season often brings a calendar full of social events — from office parties to family dinners — and with it, an increased presence of alcohol. For those who choose sobriety or want to drink less, this time of year can feel challenging. Learning how to navigate these situations with confidence is not just about saying “no,” but about understanding your triggers, setting clear intentions, and finding ways to connect that don’t depend on alcohol. Here are ways to protect your sobriety at events through the holidays.

Bring Your Own Drinks

Non-alcoholic options have come a long way. From sparkling teas to alcohol-free wines and beers, having something in your hand can quiet questions from others and make you feel included.

Lean on Your Support System

Send a quick text before or after an event to a friend or someone who “gets it.” Sometimes, knowing someone’s in your corner is all you need to stay grounded.

Have a Response Ready

If someone offers you a drink, a simple, “I’m good for now, thanks,” is enough. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for choosing what’s best for you.

Define your exit time

Knowing when you’ll leave helps avoid situations where pressure increases as the night goes on.

Start New Traditions

The holidays don’t have to revolve around alcohol. Think hot cocoa by the fire, board games, or baking nights — rituals that let you celebrate without the hangover.

If this season feels hard, you’re not alone. It’s okay to seek support. Contact us at Life's Journey Counseling to take the next step.
