Create a Grounding Routine for Summer

Summer can throw off our usual routines in both exciting and unexpected ways. The longer days, shifting schedules, family visits, and pressure to “make the most of it” can sometimes leave us feeling unmoored. Whether you're juggling kids at home, adjusting to a slower season at work, or just trying to feel more balanced, building a simple grounding routine can help bring stability and peace into your day.

Here are a few ways to create a rhythm that supports your mental wellness this summer:

Start the Day with Intention

You don’t need a long checklist or elaborate morning ritual—just one consistent thing that helps you feel anchored. This could be stepping outside with your coffee, journaling for five minutes, stretching, or even making your bed while taking a few deep breaths.

Make Time for Rest (Without the Guilt)

It’s okay to slow down. Really. Summer can bring a strange kind of pressure to do more, but rest is productive. Schedule quiet moments the same way you’d schedule errands or appointments. Reading, napping, or even simply doing nothing has value.

Move Your Body in Ways You Enjoy

Physical movement can help regulate emotions and energy levels. Walk through one of Louisville’s beautiful parks, stretch at home, or find a free outdoor yoga class nearby. The key is consistency, not intensity.

Limit Overload

Too many plans? Too much scrolling? Try a gentle reset by saying “no” more often, limiting screen time, or setting tech-free hours in your day. Creating small boundaries can leave you feeling more connected and calm.

Check In With Yourself

Build in a 1-minute check-in each day. Ask yourself: How am I feeling? What do I need today? That small act of noticing can keep you grounded and help you stay present through the ups and downs of the season.

You’re Not Alone

If this season has felt overwhelming or disconnected, know that you’re not alone. Therapy can be a place to reconnect with yourself and create a routine that works for your unique life—not just in summer, but all year long.
